Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
The gold-standard psychotherapy that helps identify and change negative thought patterns.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most researched and evidence-supported form of psychotherapy in existence. It works by helping you identify negative thought patterns, challenge distorted thinking, and develop healthier behavioral responses. CBT has proven effective for depression, anxiety, chronic pain, PTSD, insomnia, and many other conditions.
How CBT Works
CBT is based on the cognitive model: the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected. By changing how you think about a situation, you can change how you feel and act.
- Cognitive restructuring: Identifying and challenging automatic negative thoughts
- Behavioral activation: Gradually re-engaging with activities that improve mood
- Exposure therapy: Gradually facing feared situations to reduce avoidance
- Skills training: Building coping strategies, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills
CBT for Different Conditions
- CBT for depression: Targets hopeless thinking, behavioral withdrawal, and rumination
- CBT for anxiety: Addresses catastrophic thinking, avoidance, and worry cycles
- CBT for chronic pain: Changes the relationship between pain, thoughts, and suffering
- CBT for insomnia (CBT-I): The first-line treatment for chronic insomnia, more effective than sleeping pills
- CBT for PTSD: Processes traumatic memories and reduces avoidance behaviors
Outpatient vs. Intensive CBT
Standard outpatient CBT involves weekly 50-minute sessions over 12-20 weeks. While effective, this pace means skills are learned slowly and practice between sessions varies. In a residential retreat setting, CBT is delivered daily — sometimes multiple times per day — accelerating the learning process dramatically. Skills that take months to build in outpatient care can be internalized in weeks of intensive treatment.
